JuniorsWelcome to the Grasshopper Youth page. Hopefully, if you’re reading this, you want to know more about us with a view to joining us! 😀
We currently have six youth teams (and 77 youth members) who play in the Leicester Netball Youth League at Soar Valley College, Gleneagles Avenue, Thurmaston on Thursday evenings at 7 pm prompt. |
Our kit is red shirts and red skorts and everyone pays ₤10 to hire the kit for a year and then it is handed back and another ₤10 paid for the next year etc, etc. We have a plain red Grasshopper NC sweatshirt and this is available in sizes S, M and L and it currently costs ₤21.50.
Everyone pays their membership fee. Everyone, now, joins England Netball online via their Engage system which links to our Club (number 1173). They then buy the appropriate ‘package’ from us, eg U16 etc. There are then Grasshopper NC membership fees to join us and details of the current membership form can be found on the ‘Useful Info/Membership’ tab. Please note, however, with our AGM not scheduled until Thursday 30 April at Braunstone Civic Centre, our 2020-2021 fees have not yet been agreed. Your daughter’s membership to EN gives her full benefits – including insurance for when she plays netball) and our Club fees to towards paying for the upkeep and running of the youth teams, eg hire of the training venue, coaching costs etc. EN membership runs from 1 September to 31 August each year. |
When the Leicester League is not operational, then we usually train at Soar Valley College, Gleneagles Avenue, Thurmaston. Teams 4, 5 & 6 from 6.30 - 7.30 pm and Teams 1, 2 & 3 from 7.30 - 8.30 pm in the ‘bubble’ there. However, you do need to wrap up warm in there – as it is often cool! When there are matches, each player pays match fees (to cover the cost of the court hire and the umpires – who need to be paid); our match fees are ₤1 per quarter played.
Current youth training dates and times are: Thursday 7, 14, 21 May 2020; Thursday until Thursday 4, 11 (Regional Exhibition Game + Officials training & umpiring practice), 18, 25 June 2020; Thursday July 9, 16 at the times mentioned above.
We do believe in ‘stage, not age’, so if you have the talent, then you will be placed in the appropriate team. As well as developing your netball skills, we aim to develop you holistically as a person and will encourage you to develop your umpiring, scoring and coaching skills during your time with us, as well as developing your life skills (via a First Aid course).
All our youth teams are overseen and coached by Andy Scigliano (L2 Coach), who is also the Club’s Chairperson and Safeguarding Officer. We take the health and well-being of all our Club members very seriously, which is why our coaches and key personnel have attended and learned from the MIND 'Mental Health in Sport' course. For anyone who is struggling in any way at all, please speak to one of our 2 Safeguarding Officers (Andy Scigliano or Kathy Cox), or alternatively, please go to the Mind website link: www.mind.org.uk/information-support/helplines/ They have lots of useful help sheets and fact sheets.
Each youth player receives a free Netball Diary (which stays with you during your time with us), a free Grasshopper NC kit bag and a free pen (to use with your diary); you are expected to reflect upon your performance at regular intervals through the year and you are also given key information to build up your netball knowledge. The Youth Coach collects in these diaries at regular intervals to read and comment constructively on them.
If you do have the talent and potential, you are signposted to the Leicestershire County Academy – for their Performance or Development trials (held at the start of every season). If you are a GCSE PE student (or A-Level PE student), we want to know, so that we can fully support you with organising the recording of your practical netball performance. If you are doing the Duke of Edinburgh Award, we will support you fully with that, too. If you are old enough and good enough to play with the senior teams, then we will recommend you for this and give you that opportunity – but it will involve you being externally assessed by someone outside of the Club because we need to ensure that you are physically and mentally strong enough to cope with the step up. However, it is always a pleasure to see our young talent moving forwards and upwards with their netball!
We hope you have enjoyed what you have read and we hope it has persuaded you to take the first step towards a new netball opportunity and contact us via the relevant tab on this website. We look forward to receiving your enquiry!
